Kieni Factory is a washing station located near Karatina in Nyeri County, Kenya, operated by the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society. It processes coffee cherries from approximately 1,000 members within the cooperative, which manages five washing stations in total. The cooperative supports over 4,800 farmers, focusing on improving coffee yields and addressing challenges such as ageing rootstock and pest pressures.

Farmers delivering to Kieni typically cultivate around 200 coffee trees on roughly a tenth of a hectare, primarily growing SL28 and SL34 varieties known for their exceptional cup quality, alongside Batian and Ruiru 11. Labour is predominantly family-based, with many farmers also cultivating tea, maize, and legumes for local consumption or sale.

This coffee is washed processed and roasted lightly to suit filter brewing methods. It offers distinctive flavour notes of currant, blackberry, and cola, reflecting the unique terroir of the Karatina region.
